What’s going on on this site?

It has been quite sometime now and loads of articles were published on this blog. However, in the past few weeks, there seems to be a lot of change in the entries and publication of articles in this blog.

To indicate that, my faithful readers like Chaitanya and Shashi, who have been with this blog since a long time, have provided their comments on the new happenings on this blog. Their common complain is that now this blog hosts only news items and financial details, and seems that the blog has lost the unique touch that existed in the previous articles.
Hence, I thought it would be nice to explain certain things to the readers : -)

OK, now let me tell you what is happening.
First, I’m NOT a professional blogger. I blog for sharing my thoughts and sometimes become a bit greedy about earnings from adsense ads. However, the earnings are inconsistent and vary from $1 to $3 or sometimes a bit higher.

I have a full time paid job and my job requires me to keep travelling across the globe. Hence, whenever I get time, I attempt to put up a nice and unique post.

Then why are there so many posts about news items for IPOs and fund offers everyday?
Blogs work on freshness. The day I do not publish anything, the traffic comes down drastically because Search engines like Google keep on looking for fresh contents on blogs (That’s the difference between a blog and a website). If Google does not find anything new on a blog, it usually takes it as an obsolete entry and the ranking comes down. So I’ve been joined by a qualified friend on investments, who is based in India and is helping me in posting the news items about the new fund offer and reviews of upcoming IPOs.

Am I doing it to earn money?
Yes and No.

Yes, because sometimes I become optimistic that my adsense earnings might increase, (which unfortunately are not increasing : -( and staying stagnant in the range of $1 to $3 and now I have my friend to share the earnings).

NO because knowledge sharing is still the motive of this blog and I want to assist individuals in understanding the complexities and hidden truths about the stock market working and investments in insurance policies. I still want readers to come to my site and read through my best articles which are listed on “Table of Contents” page. The day I stop posting articles, the blog will no longer be getting a good ranking on search engines, hence some content is required on a daily basis.

So what have I come up with?
Keep it simple. The IPO/ NFO/ Finance News sections will be provided daily. The content will be provided by my friend; I will be reviewing it, making changes and necessary additions and finally posting the article.

I will also be writing articles in my usual tone, to explain the things that I usually enjoy. Whether it is entering the stock markets, buying insurance policies, whether ETF’s and index funds are best bet or whatever. But as I have a full paid job and I travel extensively, I may not be able to provide a unique post everyday.

What is the use of all this?
Posting new content will ensure that search engines have good ranking for the site. However, the Table of contents lists only the selected articles, which I want all the readers to read. That’s why on all pages, I compulsorily provide a link to TOC, not to any and all kinds of articles.

What do I get out of all this?
Nothing, but pure satisfaction. Some people smoke, play games, do pastime in various forms. I enjoy this hobby and I want to keep it popular : -)

Do let me know your thoughts and your expectations, if any.

Earning money by Blogging: Select a good topic

Following my first part on Earning money from blogging So let me continue on my blogging experiences.

I started blogging because I found a way to express my views. I took it as a medium to share my knowledge with the interested people. Most of my articles were off the track, against the generally believed principles of “Stock Markets always go up”.

However, money or earning income from blogging was never an expectation for me in the beginning. Even today, I make only a daily income in the range of $1 to $3.

Sometimes I wonder what I am missing in my blog, which others have. People who focus of technology or even blogs dedicated to blogging are making a hell lot of money. The top Indian blogger Amit Agarwal has posted a pic of his new SUV car, a HONDA CR-V. The title of his blogpost is “ Google AdSense and Blogging Brought Me This Car”. All coming from his 5 digit dollar monthly income from blogging and income from Adsense.

After a long thought, I now feel that I someone has to earn money from blogging, he should select a topic which really clicks. My blog is about finance. The biggest problem with financial topics is that they become obsolete very soon.

I may write a great blogpost about the review of Reliance Power IPO or the latest happenings in the US about the Subprime Mortgage Crisis or on a lesser known valuation of Aishwarya Telecom IPO or the case of Infosys declaring a dividend.

The biggest problem with all these things and topics is that they become obsolete within a matter of 1-2 weeks. Even if Google search ranks my post on ICICI RICH Fund NFO Review in the tope 3 results, it will remain a search term for a very short period of time. Hence, the question is of sustainability. When people will no longer search for items you are posting, no matter how good your post is, it will not be fruitful.

So, for prospective bloggers, make sure you select the right topics. Technology is a good topic (unfortunately, I’m not good at it). Even if you can see Windows Vita coming into the market, thousands of people across the globe will still have millions of questions about windows 98 and its troubleshooting. Adobe may come up with latest version of Photoshop, but the primitive version will still be used. More so, bloggers on technology can continue to write on the new versions.

Let’s see if I can put up some more useful tips and mistakes to avoid in the next article, for the prospective bloggers. Table of Contents

Earning money from Blogging

Can you make money from blogging?
How much can someone earn from blogging?

Now, there are individuals like Amit Agarwal and others like those running sites problogger.net, who are making a hell lot of money each month just by publishing something or the other article everyday. After more than 6 years of IT career, Amit Agarwal left his software job in IT city of India and now settled in his hometown in UP – All that he is doing is blogging and making more than 5 digit dollar income each month from blogging. If you take the minimum 5 digit figure, it is 10,000 dollar. Using a forex rate of 40 Rs. per dollar, it translates to 4 lakh Rs. per month or 48 lakhs per annum – that’s the minimum!

He has relocated to his hometown, so no tension of EMI repayments and buying another flat or renting out. Excellent Move I would say.

The million dollar question is - Can you do it?

Let’s not forget that Amit started blogging much ahead of time, when most of the individuals were still unaware about blogging. He has been blogging for a long time now, more than 4-5 years! Today, he has more than 45,000 blogposts and more than 23000 readers have subscribed to his blog.

Compare it to my case. I started blogging in May 2007 – just for fun. No motivation for earning money by blogging! However, the blogging fever caught me big time and I started publishing stuff regularly. I added some advertisements from Google Adsense, went into customizing the templates and blogger formats using my limited programming knowledge and today, I may be publishing on an average 3 articles per day. So effectively, almost a year now.

How about my earnings from blogging? I usually make only 1-3 dollars a day. That translates to 30 to 90 dollars a month or 1200 to 3600 Rs. per month – and remember the amount varies a lot. To reach a stage where I can take a decision whether I should wholly depend upon blogging for earning my living is a tough and impossible call for me, atleast as of now. Staying in a costly metro city either in India or abroad, can only mean that my earnings from blogging are sufficient only to the extent of buying a cappuccino from Starbucks in US/UK, or a Frappe from CafĂ© coffee day in India.

So point number 1: It’s not easy to make money from blogging. The market is efficient – hundreds of market players (bloggers) are already in there.

In the next article, let me talk about what is good and bad in my blog about making money! Table of Contents
