The educational institutes across the globe are also preparing to go for the IPO route to raise money. Recently, the Grand Canyon University, a private Christian college in Phoenix, filed an application with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for an IPO or Initial Public Offering.

As per the news on BJ, Private investors purchased the university in 2004 when it was having financial difficulties, growing it from nearly 5,000 students to nearly 15,000 students today. Of those students, 12,497 are online and 2,2547 are in traditional classrooms, according to SEC documents.

For the year ended Dec. 31, 2007, Grand Canyon reported net income of $3 million on net revenue of $99 million, compared with $1.1 million in net income on $72 million in revenue for 2006.

From Feb. 2 (when it was purchased by investors) to Dec. 31, 2004, Grand Canyon lost $16.2 million on $25.6 million in revenue. By 2005, losses improved to $3.8 million on $51.8 million in revenue.

On April 15, Grand Canyon management paid $19.5 million to the former owner of the college, adding to an initial $3 million payment in October 2007, according to the filing. These were paid to resolve a dispute with the former owner.
